Dirty water leads to illness, which leads to less time working or studying, which in turn leads to lower incomes, and makes escaping the cycle of poverty ever more difficult. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the consequences of poor water, sanitation and hygiene have become even more devastating.

That’s why safe, fresh water is key to breaking the cycle. By installing water pumps and sanitation units near their homes, children and their communities are healthier, more protected from sickness and have better personal hygiene.

By providing clean water, sanitation units, and free education to underprivileged communities in rural Cambodia and Myanmar, we are proud to contribute towards 8 of the sustainable development goals!

Digital literacy is increasingly recognised as central to the skillset a child requires for school, work, and life1. Yet most existing tools place little emphasis on children. UNICEF points out that digital literacy frameworks generally do not focus on children specifically.

Implementing digital literacy frameworks is not easy, with the key barriers being a lack of training capacity; lack of ICT infrastructure; and low connectivity. MMPower Foundation is striving to break down these barriers, one village at a time in Myanmar and Cambodia. Our vision is to support children to be both safe and empowered in an increasingly digital world. We work with local partners to provide equipment and internationally recognised computer training programmes to children. By doing so, MMPower equips these children with skills to break the poverty cycle.

The consequences of unsafe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) on children can be deadly1: 80% of childhood disease is related directly or indirectly to unsafe drinking water, inadequate hygiene, and open defecation. Almost 90% of all child deaths from diarrhoeal disease are related to unsafe water and inadequate sanitation. Diarrhoeal disease is responsible for 15 percent of deaths worldwide among children younger than five. Yet, more than 1.2 billion people in the world do not have access to adequate sanitation facilities2.

Global evidence shows that handwashing with soap and clean water is the single most effective intervention for reducing diarrhea. MMPower Foundation is helping to improve systems and practices that fulfill a child’s fundamental right to WASH, one village at a time.
